How Strict Are EasyJet’s Baggage Rules?
A Word On EasyJet’s Strictness
EasyJet takes Cabin Bag sizing seriously, known for its firm enforcement of baggage rules - intending for all Cabin Bags to be checked before boarding.
However, it is always subject to situational circumstances of each airport on the day.
How To Measure Your Cabin Bags
To avoid unexpected fees or disruption to boarding smoothly, here are some practical methods to ensure your Small or Large Cabin Bag meets EasyJet's requirements:
Use EasyJet’s Self-Service Baggage Gauges
Available at most airports, usually located near the check-in desks or boarding gates. These official size gauges are the most accurate way to verify your Cabin Bag’s compliance with EasyJet’s restrictions.
Individual gauges are available for testing both Small and Large Cabin Bags.
How It Works:
- Place your bag into the appropriate gauge slot for either Small or Large Cabin Bags.
- If it fits without forcing, your bag is good to go.
- If it doesn't fit, consider checking your bag into the hold.
Digital Measurement Applications
For extra precaution, consider verifying your Cabin Bag dimensions well before you head to the airport by using a smartphone bag measurement app such as:
- EasyJet App
- Kayak
How To Use:
- Download the application from the Apple Store or Google Play Store.
- Open the application on your device.
- Scroll down and select: “Measure your bag”.
- Read the instruction steps provided.
- Position your bag in a clear, well-lit location and select: “Get Started”.
- Point the camera at your bag from a short distance.
- Press and hold the button to start scanning your bag.
- Ensure you capture the top and sides of the bag.
- Wait for the app to calculate your dimensions.
- Cross-reference your bag size with the EasyJet dimensions.
Note: While these apps can give you a rough estimate, they aren’t as precise as physical measurements or EasyJet’s official baggage gauge. Use them as a guide, not a definitive solution.
Taking Liquids Onboard
You can bring liquids, gels and aerosols in your Cabin Bag(s). However, there are specific restrictions on the quantity, container size and how these items must be stored when passing through security. Here's everything you need to know:

Sneaky Traveller Tip (Use at Your Own Risk)
If your allowance only includes the Small Cabin Bag, bringing an additional item like the London Sling Bag could technically incur extra fees.
However, here are a few clever tricks for avoiding detection:
Conceal the Sling Bag
The London Sling Bag is compact enough to be discreetly worn under a coat or jacket. When worn this way, it’s often overlooked by airline staff.
Use EasyJet’s Small Print
EasyJet’s baggage policy allows passengers to bring one standard bag of goods purchased at the airport. To stay within the rules:
- Place the London Sling Bag inside a duty-free carrier bag from an airport shop.
- Carry it onboard as if it were a purchase.
Disclaimer: These tips are provided for informational purposes only. Always double-check the latest airline policies, as attempting to bypass rules may carry risks, including fees.

Checked-in Baggage
For longer trips or when you need to carry larger, bulkier belongings, EasyJet’s checked-in baggage options provide a convenient solution.
Whether you’re traveling with family or heading on an extended holiday, understanding the rules and options for checking baggage in will help you pack efficiently and avoid surprises at the airport.
EasyJet Hold Luggage - Explained
EasyJet refers to checked-in baggage as: Hold Luggage and Hold Bags.
This is for luggage that you check in at the airline bag-drop counter when you arrive at the airport, before passing through security.
It will not be accessible to you during the flight and you recover it at the luggage carousel after customs on arrival.
How Many Hold Bags Can I Check In?
Passengers are allowed to bring up to Three Hold Bags (this includes individual children and infants), which can be purchased with different weight allowances.
Hold Luggage Weight Allowance
EasyJet offers a range of Hold Luggage options to suit different travel needs:
- 15kg Hold Bag
- 23kg Standard Hold Bag
- Up to 32kg Hold Bag
⚠️ Note: Hold Luggage weight limits and availability may vary depending on your flight’s destination.
What Is Pooling Weight Allowance?
Pooling weight allowance refers to the ability of passengers traveling under the same booking to combine their individual baggage weight allowances.
Instead of each person being restricted to their own allocated weight, they can distribute the total allowance among their bags, provided specific conditions are met.
For example, with EasyJet, passengers can share the weight across their luggage as long as no single bag exceeds the maximum limit (in this case, 32kg).
This policy is convenient for families or groups who want to balance packing more efficiently.
How Much Does Hold Luggage Cost?
The cost of Hold Luggage with EasyJet depends on the weight of your bag and other factors such as your route, flight and when you make your booking.
Keep in mind, the total cost also considers the combined number of hold bags (up to three per person).
- Up to 15kg: From £6.99 (available to purchase online only; fee varies depending on route, flight and time of booking).
- Up to 23kg: From £9.49 (or £40 at bag drop desk).
- Additional weight (pre-booked): Up to £15 per 3kg, to a maximum of 32kg.
Can I Purchase Extra Hold Bag Weight?
You can purchase extra weight in 3kg units, up to a maximum of 32kg per bag.
Or for a 15kg Hold Bag, you can add weight up to a maximum of 27kg post booking.
Additional weight can only be purchased online, either at initial booking or post using "Manage Booking".
Additional weight fees are up to £15 per 3kg, per item, per flight.
Hold Luggage Excess Weight Fee
EasyJet charge a fee, applied to each piece of luggage that exceeds its pre-booked weight allowance:
£12 per kilogram (kg) for each kilogram over the pre-booked weight allowance.
Individual Hold Luggage items cannot exceed 32 kg. If a bag surpasses this weight, it will not be accepted for travel.
Size Restrictions for Hold Luggage
EasyJet's Hold Bag maximum total size dimensions are:
(length + width + height) = under 275cm.
Meaning the combined measurements of the bag’s length, width and height should not exceed this limit.
For example, a suitcase measuring 85cm x 55cm x 135cm would fit within the allowed dimensions.
Smart Luggage - Explained
Smart luggage refers to bags equipped with built-in lithium batteries or power banks, often used to charge devices or power the bag’s features (e.g., GPS tracking or electronic locks). While convenient, these batteries come with strict safety regulations due to potential risks.
If you plan to check smart luggage into the hold:
- Battery Removal Is Required: Before handing your bag over at the Bag Drop, you must disconnect and remove the lithium battery or power bank.
- Carry the Battery in the Cabin: The removed battery must be kept with you in the cabin during the flight.
- Protect the Battery Terminals: Cover any exposed terminals with tape or protective covers to prevent accidental short circuits, ensuring compliance with safety guidelines.
- If the battery cannot be removed, the bag cannot be accepted as checked luggage.
⚠️ Always check EasyJet’s guidelines on lithium battery restrictions before traveling.
Bag Drop Information
On arrival at the airport, EasyJet has a time window to check-in your Hold Luggage at the bag drop desks.
The bag drop open and closure times are specific to each flight and vary based on the airport and destination.
BAG DROP OPENS:

A maximum of 6 large items can be booked online for any single booking, regardless of the number of passengers on that booking.
Musical Instruments
As mentioned previously, EasyJet allows you to bring musical instruments along on your flight.
Understanding the size limitations and rules for carrying musical instruments will ensure your instrument is safely stored, either in the cabin or in the hold.
Putting Instruments in the Hold
If your musical instrument doesn’t meet the size or safety requirements for cabin travel, or you’d prefer not to carry it on board, you can check it by purchasing a Hold Luggage allowance.
- Specialist packaging is highly recommended to ensure your instrument is protected during travel.
- To protect your musical instrument against potential damage, loss or theft during travel, it’s highly recommended that you purchase specialist travel insurance.
Cabin Baggage Options for Musical Instruments
The size of the musical instrument you can bring on board depends on the Cabin Bag allowance for your flight.
- Small Cabin Bag (max. 45 x 36 x 20 cm)
Instruments that fit within these dimensions, including the case, can be brought on board as part of your Small Cabin Bag allowance. It must fit under the seat in front of you.
- Large Cabin Bag (max. 56 x 45 x 25 cm)
Instruments that are slightly larger but still within the Large Cabin Bag size limit can be brought on board, provided they fit in the overhead locker. This can be in addition to your Small Cabin Bag.
- Larger Instruments (up to 30 x 117 x 38 cm)
Instruments larger than the Large Cabin Bag allowance but smaller than 30 x 117 x 38 cm can also be carried onboard. They must fit in the overhead locker and will be allowed as part of your Large Cabin Bag allowance or in place of it.
Extra Large Instruments
If your musical instrument is larger than 30 x 117 x 38 cm (including case), it can only travel in the cabin if you purchase a separate seat for it:
- A seat must be booked in the name of “Mr Musical Instrument.”
- The instrument (including its case) must not exceed 75kg.
- The instrument must fit within a seat width of 43cm.
- The instrument must not extend more than 30cm above the top of the seat back.

- If crew members feel the instrument cannot be safely stowed, it will be placed in the hold.
- Seats purchased for musical instruments do not come with any cabin bag allowance.
